Simplifying the converged last mile network evolution

Aug. 24, 2023
Service providers are transforming their last mile networks to fiber to satisfy the growing appetite from consumers and businesses for bandwidth-hungry services like streaming video and cloud. While GPON enabled providers to deliver 1 Gbps fiber broadband, service providers now are migrating to 10G (XGS-PON) with an eye towards 5OG PON and beyond. These networks can enable a host of dedicated 10G services, 5G fronthaul, and residential services on a single fiber. But the movement to higher speed PON is only one part of the equation. While it used to take several networks to support these services, providers have an opportunity to build a simplified network architecture that can enable improved operational efficiencies and an enhanced subscriber experience. In this On Topic, we will discuss the methods and opportunities in moving to a converged last mile network.
